As the 1997 national elections in Britain were approaching, the maintenance of Yacht Britannia was becoming a hassle. Hence, when Tony Blair won the election, the fate of Royal Yacht Britannia was sealed, leading to its decommission.

The staterooms of the yacht were designed to resemble that of a luxurious palace. What’s worth noting is that being a large yacht the size of a cruise line ship, the Royal Yacht Britannia was vastly spacious.

One of the highlights of the interior was the large dining area. The dining table could accommodate 32 guests. This should give you an idea of the sheer size and opulence of the yacht.

Another noteworthy detail of the interior was that the yacht was covered with artifacts that were gifted to the royal family from around the world. The Royal Yacht Britannia was built by John Brown & Co. shipyard in Clydebank, Dunbartonshire. The yacht was completed in 1953 and commissioned by Queen Elizabeth II the following year.

The entire ship was designed to be converted into a hospital ship in the event of a war. However, this particular aspect or capability of the royal yacht was never really used.

Right off the bat, you will notice that the Royal Yacht Britannia was a large private yacht. The total length of the yacht is 412 ft. (126 meters). It has three masts: the foremast measuring 41 meters, the mainmast measuring 42 meters, and the mizzenmast measuring 36 meters.

The beam of the yacht measures 17 meters in length, and the draught max measure is 4.6 meters. It features two Pametrada steam engines that produce a combined power output of 12,000 horsepower.

The Royal Yacht Britannia could reach a top speed of 21.5 knots and could travel to a distance of 2,400 nautical miles at average speed. Overall, the yacht was capable of accommodating a total of 250 passengers.

A total of 21 officers and 250 royal yachtsmen were onboard the ship at all times. Royal navy officers would be appointed every two years to serve the royal family aboard the yacht. Some of the crew members included royal yachtsmen who had served on the ship for more than 20 years.

A statue of Ellie Norrell is built at the port where the ship is currently docked. This is to pay homage to his 34 years of service as a yachtsman. He was the longest-serving yachtsman of the Royal Yacht Britannia.
